Midelfart – Hellum family photographs

There were a number of considerations before assembling this collection:

1. What time span should the site cover? How far back should its reach extend, laterally, in any given tree? And similarly, when should its reach terminate?
   1. • I decided to include all family – both Midelfort and Hellum – as far as I could, although, there are a few “Stang-Lunds” in here, as well as some “Holsts” and others as they married into the family (or us into theirs!).
2. How should the collection be displayed?
   1. • I decided to stop the collection at 1980. The Midlefort image collection gets spotty after 1970 (although there are a few from a Chetek visit in 1979) and starts to consist of just images of my immediate family, and I suspect this is of less interest to the broader family who might visit this site. But, of course, the images are open for all to review.
      • I opted for an ‘image gallery’ format with clickable thumbnails that open to ‘full size’ renders. Images are collected in Year-groups to make it easier to bunch in meaningful numbers. Once you’re viewing a ‘large’ image version, you can click on its left and right arrows to navigate through the collection-Year without having to go back to thumbnails. Just click off an image anywhere else to see thumbnails again.
3. What sort of metadata (and how much) should be included for each image?
   1. • Filenames appear below images when viewed ‘full size.’ To see captioning, view thumbnails. Having captioning appear under full-size images is not possible at this time.
4. What about fluidity? How best should incoming corrections to mistakes in dates/names/duplicates be accepted and managed?
   1. • I am certain I have some dates entered incorrectly and most likely some persons misidentified. Let me know the filename under the thumbnail (eg. NO-LK-71-06-04), I’ll make the correction. In all cases where a caption appears, the data has been culled as-is from the rear of the existing photo or album it’s come from. I have guessed the year in many cases. Where an image does not have metadata beyond a year notification, I have observed the image content for persons and season.
5. What about spelling differences (Midelfort/Midelfart)?
   1. • I have opted to use ‘Midelfart’ for the years before 1925 – and certainly where it’s written as such on the back of a photograph – and ‘Midelfort’ thereafter.
6. Can you search photos?
   1. • Searching is now possible. Look for the magnifying glass in the navigation menu at the top of each page. Note that the page of search results has an ‘older entries’ link at the bottom. This just means there are more results available under the link.
7. Can you contribute?
   1. • Absolutely! Send me scans of images you have or send originals and I’ll scan them carefully and send them right back to you. Where you have the option, original negatives are preferred.
