I tried a thing with OWen tonight that we hadn’t tried for a long time : night-time questions in the dark in bed after lights out. \u00a0In this scenario, Owen can ask any question under the sun and I’ll do my best to answer as\u00a0honestly\u00a0as I can.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tonight’s first question:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Dada, I know its kind of a bad word. \u00a0I heard it at school, but what’s a ‘dick’?”<\/p>\n

“Well Owen,” I replied, “its another word for penis and you’re right its often used as a bad word.”<\/p>\n

“Oh.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Second question:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Dada, what’s a gaoler?” \u00a0(NB, I’ve sort of given the game away because of the spelling I’ve used here)<\/p>\n

“Well, its a person who works in a jail, and whose responsibility it is to look after the prisoners – make sure they’re fed and kept in line. \u00a0That sort of thing.”<\/p>\n

“Oh. Well because there’s a gaoler <“jailer”> in the Tale of Despereaux<\/a> whose name is Gregory. \u00a0He had a rope to keep him safe, to lead him through all the mazes in the dungeons. \u00a0But he died.”<\/p>\n

“Are you worried about Gregory, or maybe being like Gregory, or something?”<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“Are you ok?”<\/p>\n

“Yep. Night night Dada”<\/p>\n

“Night night lovey”<\/p>\n
