Sunset over the Wadi Al Araba, as seen from halfway up Jebel Rum.
Lone tree just south of the townsite of Wadi Rum.
Reflections inside a Christian church near the Syrian border town of Irbid.
The Daewoo car I was driving with two companions when I totalled it on the King’s highway outside ‘Amman at 4:30 in the morning on the way to the archeological site we were going to photograph before backfill for the season. We all walked away more or less unscathed. I discovered two years later that I had broken the big toe on my right foot. I was arrested by the military police and jailed for three days. After that, I was paraded before two courts (everything conducted in Arabic) and pronounced guilty and fined US$50. I asked what for afterwards to the policeman guiding me and he said speeding and destruction of public property (I had bashed into the cement stanchion at the bottom of a light standard).
